Rethinking the Way We Use Plastics

Filmed at GLG London

What can lawmakers and corporations do to reduce the environmental impact of plastics? Despite initiatives like bottle deposits, plastic bag taxes, and low plastic water bottles, a staggering 95% of all plastic products are thrown away every year after just one use—according to industry expert Paul Hodges. He believes “we’ve come to a fork in the road,” not simply about how we use plastics, but also how we keep them in use for longer. GLG sits down with Paul Hodges in London to discuss the plastics industry, waste management, and more.

Paul Hodges is Chairman of International eChem (IeC), an independent firm that provides analysis of chemical and petrochemical markets for major companies and investors. As Chairman, Hodges helps clients better understand and manage the commercial and financial risks of today’s volatile oil and financial markets. Hodges has worked in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and has garnered a client base that includes major chemical companies, leading investment banks, and hedge funds.

Hodges is a member of both the Chemicals Industrial Council of the World Economic Forum and the Energy Institute as well as an advisory board member for ICIS—the world’s largest information source for petrochemical pricing and news. Hodges is also a non-executive Chairman of NiTech Solutions, a fast-growing technology spin-out of Scotland’s Heriot Watt University. Prior to joining IeC, Hodges had spent 17 years at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), serving in various executive positions.
